SIERRA Nevada ski resort closed due to bad weather

The Sierra Nevada ski resort has been forced to close on Monday, December 28 due to severe weather in the area, with freezing rain pelting down and gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour. According to sources from the resort’s management company Cetursa, the extreme weather in the entire Grandad region has compromised the safe operation of the ski lifts.

The wind has reached 80 kilometers per hour in El Veleta and 70 in Borreguiles and visibility has been severely restricted in all areas of Sierra Nevada, with temperatures ranging between ten and three degrees below zero.

More than half of Spain is on high alert for Storm Bella which has been battering much of Europe in recent days. The storm brought winds of up to 125km/h and waves up to 10 metres tall to Asturias yesterday, December 27.
