EIGHT people were treated by Red Cross volunteers and paramedics and a building had to be evacuated in Aguilas, after a fire broke out.

The fire originated in the garage of the building and caused damage to two cars, according to the Emergency Coordination Centre of Murcia.

Fire fighters were first warned of the blaze by a neighbour on the third floor of the building, located in Calle Blas Rosique Blaya in the town, reporting the intense plume of smoke.

Fire crews, Red Cross, local police and ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene as residents were found trapped on their balconies, prompting police to evacuate the whole building.

Of the eight people attended to, two were transferred to hospital for smoke inhalation.
