Mario Herrera Resigns From La Rioja Post After Christmas Car Crash.

THE General Director of Participation and Human Rights of the Government of La Rioja (Podemos La Rioja), Mario Herrera, who crashed his car at Christmas, has resigned from his public position after reporting to the National Police that he has been receiving death threats “against him, his family, friends and neighbours” in what he assured them was “a harassment campaign organised by the extreme right.”

An “unsustainable” situation despite the fact that “in politics, as in life, one must be willing to make sacrifices” but receiving a multitude of threatening messages even in his own home and at his workplace, has pushed him to take the decision and say “enough already,” he said through a video released on social media.

Herrera defined his current experiences a sign of “fascism” and a “defeat of democracy.” In addition, he criticises “the complicit silence of some sectors, in the face of the fascist attacks it has suffered.”

“Today I am the victim of fascism, because I am from Podemos, as is Vice President Pablo Iglesias, but tomorrow it can be anyone.”

For her part, the Minister for Equality, Participation and the 2030 Agenda, Raquel Romero, said she regretted that Herrera has decided to leave his position, although she understands that the situation had become “complicated” after receiving multiple threats.

Herrera, his department has pointed out, suffered an accident on January 1 while accompanying a relative to the emergency room after a fall at his home. Despite the fact that the accident “only caused material damage to the vehicle itself, a campaign of fake news, lies and harassment was organised on social networks and in his own home that has finally been reported to the National Police.”

Guardia Civil investigated the event and Herrera apparently received penalties for the accident. There was speculation that it had occurred after the COVID curfew.
