Irish crime boss John Gilligan arrested in Alicante

VETERAN Irish crime boss John Gilligan, 68, was arrested in Alicante on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Spanish police arrested Gilligan and six others on Thursday, October 22 in a commercial building in Alicante in an international operation to break up the sale and supply of drugs in Ireland and the UK.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Spanish National Police stated: ‘Those arrested, led by a well-known Irish criminal, were part of a violent group of drug and arms traffickers and specialised in sending illegal merchandise from Spain to the United Kingdom and Ireland through parcels.” Spanish police reportedly intercepted four packages containing 4kg of marijuana and 15,000 pills.

In an unexpected twist, a Colt Python gun which was found buried in the garden of the premises is reported to be the same model used in the assassination of Veronica Guerin in 1996. Spanish ballistics experts are now analysing the weapon to confirm whether it is the same revolver a motorbike hitman used to murder 37-year-old Guerin after she stopped at traffic lights on the outskirts of Dublin in her red Opel Calibra in 1996.

Gilligan was acquitted of ordering Guerin’s assassination nearly 20 years ago.
