Chinese officials have insisted that any investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic should not be confined just to China and point to Spain as an alternative source bringing back memories of the Spanish flu.
The statements came ahead of a World Health Organization “scoping mission” to China next week, to establish a platform to trace the emergence of Sars-Cov-2.
Senior government health adviser Wang Guangfa referenced research in Barcelona which detected Covid-19 in a wastewater sample from March 2019 to suggest any investigation into its origins should look at Spain.
“We can fight the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO. Zeng Guang, the chief epidemiologist for the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told the state-run Global Times: “It does not matter which country the scientific identification work starts with, as long as it involves all related countries and is fairly conducted.”
Independent experts have slammed the research as flawed and contradictory to strong evidence suggesting the virus started in China in late 2019. Director of the UCL Genetics Institute in London Professor Francois Balloux said: “The most plausible explanation is sample mix-up/contamination.”
The Spanish Flu-Wikipedia Reference
The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the deadliest in history, infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide—about one-third of the planet’s population—and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims, including some 675,000 Americans. The 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world.
At the time, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat this killer flu strain. Citizens were ordered to wear masks, schools, theaters, and businesses were shuttered and bodies piled up in makeshift morgues before the virus ended its deadly global march.

Just a brief observation, if you read wikipedia and any other historical file, you will find that the “Spanish flu” didn’t begin, not even close, in Spain. It originated in Kansas USA and spread throughout Europe. Spain was the only country that gave public news of the disease.
the money spent on how Covid 19 started would be better spent trying to stop it.
It’s almost as if there is something said about it in the article :
“We can fight the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO.
If the virus was in Spain as early as March 2019, the pandemia had would outbreak long time ago. Barcelona and its area has a high density of population. My question is: Is the chinese government trying to hide the overhelming evidence of the Zero Zone origin (Wuhan) and trying to generate amgry discomfort at the spanish people to start riots and fireing against chinesse businesses at Spain, to victimize themselves?. I am an spanish citizen, nobody here is going to use any kind of violence against any chinesse citizen here, a lot of them born at Spain, so they spanish citizens too. No, they are innocent people, the problem has been China itself, who hide the information about the pandemia. So easy, and no more. Very dirty and ugly what the chinesse governmentdid has done: wrong try mates, you try again at another place!. Hope the chinesse wiseful people could be free soon from your dictatorship. Very sad what the commumism has finally becomed, a monster. History is watching.
The virus has mutated and there are presently three strains, Even before the out break in China persons were treated for what was thought to be the flu in Europe, America and South America which later was discovered to have been covid 19.
1. Flu and covid 19 are diseases that are similar at first sight but with different symptoms: the type of cough in advanced flu is different from the type of dry cough in covid 19. 2. Covid 19 pulmonary pneumonia affects the lower respiratory system, generally going unnoticed until a fatal outcome. 3. Children and adolescents in large percentages have been asymptomatic or unaffected by covid19. This is different in the flu, where children and adolescents are affected because their immune system is not yet fully developed. Any moderately trained health personnel would have noticed the differences between them.
4. There is no scientific evidence of what you claim that covid19 was already circulating in Europe and the American continent, or the Americas, as you prefer. Was the virus circulating in these areas and did not cause an outbreak? Did it come to China from these areas and outbreak occurred in Wuhan? Are you suggesting this? Any scientific explanation for that statement? 5. Both in Europe and in the Americas there are very densely populated areas, as well as in China. 6. As for the strains, it is normal for a new pandemic to start with a more aggressive and deadly strain and as time passes the subsequent strains soften. Are you suggesting according to your statement that covid19 strains in both Europe and the Americas were of the “soft” type and that it was in China that mutated to the strongest? This is the opposite of what usually happens, in fact what has happened is that the virus has mutated into not so aggressive strains.
You make short (dis)information that has required a longer response.
I am a graduate student in nursing, sorry if I have made any mistake.
