GORMAIG: Used by firefighting aircraft, credit: Alcoy city hall
ALCOY, whose countryside is threatened each summer by forest fire, plans year-round for the period when the risk is highest. Undergrowth and fallen trees are being removed from woodland areas and vegetation have been cleared, even during lockdown, from the verges of paths and roads, under city hall’s Local Fire Prevention plan. The heliport in the Gormaig area also received attention, ready for the firefighting aircraft provided by the regional government and Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion when needed. The forest firefighting unit has also been at work in areas that are still suffering the after-effects of Storm Gloria in January and further storms last February, city hall revealed. Meanwhile, the Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar (CHJ) responsible for the area’s watercourses has cleared vegetation and fallen trees from the bed and banks of the River Riquer.
