Town Planning councillor insists no similarity between restoring Calle Bikini building and demolishing Velez-Malaga's municipal market

VELEZ-MALAGA: The municipal market in better days credit: Tyk

VELEZ-MALAGA’S Town Planning councillor Javier Garcia accused Convergencia Andalaza (CA) of “deforming reality” and politicising the municipal market’s demolition.
The party was making “ridiculous comparisons” between two totally different situations, Garcia maintained.
He explained that the owner of a building in Calle Bikini, cited by CA, consulted the town hall about the planning conditions affecting the property.
He initially believed that substituting the building with another was preferable to rehabilitation but learnt that the property was built before the PGOU-87 town plan and did not comply with regulations.  As a new building would been smaller, the owner decided to restore the existing building which was not dangerous or dilapidated.
In contrast, the municipal market, was practically in ruins, Garcia continued.
“Rehabilitation would have cost 50 per cent more than a new building and was economically ruinous,” he said.
Garcia called on CA to stop putting obstacles in the way of the new municipal market.
“It seems that CA’s sole objective during this legislature is ensuring there is no new market, only a hole in the ground,” he declared.
