Restaurant in Up Market Area of Spain’s Costa del Sol Publicly Disdainful of Current Government

Asador Guadalmina disinfects against the Spanish Government Credit: OPS

THE owner of the Asador Guadalmina, a bar and restaurant just outside of San Pedro Alcantara (Marbella) has a history of standing up to socialist governments in Madrid.

For years he had a poster inside which effectively said that this restaurant, is right wing, catholic and Spanish – if you don’t like it, don’t bother to come in.

At the time of the introduction of the smoking ban inside restaurants, he simply ignored the law and was fined thousands of euros on a regular basis and this continued until about 18 months ago when he gave up smoking!

During that time, he banned every member of the then Spanish government from his establishment and produced labels for wine which showed images of Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Iglesias dressed as prisoners behind bars.

Perhaps not surprisingly, although a lot of the cuisine is Basque inspired, this is a popular eatery with those from Madrid and it was not unusual when the Partido Popular was in power to see the odd minster drop in with their families whilst staying at their second homes in Marbella.

Now he has just re-opened after lockdown and whilst complying with the rules, his new decorations show Iglesias as a smart businessman with details of his worth, Sánchez as Pinocchio with a very long nose, a huge poster saying government resign and new wine labels along the lines of the previous ones.

Perhaps the ‘piece de resistance’ is the hand gel which costs €4 and comes in a tiny bottle, berating the government and says “Protege de virus de Sánchez, del coleta y de toda su banda”, in English “Protects from Sanchez virus, pigtail and all his gang”.

All of the staff wear masks made from the Spanish flag and bookings can be made now.
