THE Guardia Civil are investigating a 57-year-old Velez-Malaga man, accused of abandoning a dog in Salobreña.

The SOS Animales Salobreña animal protection association reported the man after the dog, an old female greyhound, was found wandering in the street.

The dog was undernourished and ridded with parasites, tumours and scars, a Guardia Civil statement revealed.

The Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit Seprona based in Motril took over the investigation and have now traced the owner to Velez-Malaga, thanks to the dog’s microchip.

He claimed that he had given the dog away six months earlier although the Guardia Civil investigators doubted his story as the microchip information had not been modified and no-one had reported the dog as missing or stolen.

Seprona sources also pointed out that it was common amongst those who use greyhounds as hunting dogs to abandon them when they grow old and are of no further use to them.
