And figures show of the 22,332 fatalities since March 31, when this sort of data was recorded, 25 per cent had diabetes, a fifth had dementia, 15 per cent had COPD, while just five per cent had no pre-existing health problems.
Diabetes affects an estimated one in 16 people in the UK, and doctors say diabetics would have a better chance against the virus if they manage their condition properly.
The government’s official deathtoll shows a total of 33,614 people have died of coronavirus in the UK, including 24,100 in hospitals in England.
