CALPE’S Social Services department allocated over €15,000 in emergency help for residents whose finances were hit by the Covid-19 lockdown.
Staff began processing applications on April 3 and in the first four days received 358 phone calls and 349 emails, assigning €15,770 after reviewing 98 cases.
Social Services anticipates allocating another €15,000 after receiving more requests on April 14, 15 and 16 following the Easter break.
This funding, approved at the last council meeting, is direct assistance to cover the cost of food, personal hygiene products and chemist’s bills for residents without resources.
Two employees from other municipal departments have been transferred to Social Services to provide backup and push through Covid-19 assistance, with two more due to arrive shortly.
Four more staff have been assigned to the town hall’s Home Care service while Social Services are also attending to gender violence cases.
