5G DRONE: Test run on the Poniente beach. Photo credit: Benidorm town hall
BENIDORM hosted the world’s first drone flight controlled by 5G in a physical urban setting. The drone was remotely controlled beyond the pilot’s sightline, thanks to Benidorm’s 5G coverage provided by Vodafone, which is rolling out fifth-generation technology in Spain. One of the drone’s test-runs was a four-kilometre fictitious “mercy dash” carrying medication from the Poniente beach to Benidorm Island. The flight was authorised by Spain’s State Aviation Safety Agency(AESA) and carried out with collaboration from Benidorm town hall, the Centre for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
