STORM GLORIA: Raging seas provided dramatic backdrops. Photo credit: Javea town hall
FIVE Dutch tourists taking photographs at the height of Storm Gloria were injured after they were pummelled by violent waves. They were standing on the breakwater at Calpe’s Puerto Blanco marina when the wall of water hit but managed to cling to the rocks to avoid being swept out to sea. Instead, the mountainous waves flung them into the marina where all were injured to varying degrees. One of the party broke a leg and had to be evacuated by the Guardia Civil and paramedics who transferred him to the local hospital. Municipal sources throughout the Costa Blanca agreed afterwards that visitors and residents alike stubbornly ignored calls not to endanger their lives or their possible rescuers and continued to take selfies against the dramatic backdrop provided by the raging storm.
