Alfaz’s Hogar del Pensionista raised €1,300 for two local charities. The senior citizens who belong to the Hogar del Pensionista recently presented the money they have raised to Mara Martinez, president of the Benidorm branch of the Red Cross, and Fernando Romero, area director for APSA, a support group for persons with cognitive disabilities. The Red Cross has premises in Calle Francia where help is available for the most vulnerable members of the population, including the elderly and the victims of gender violence. As well as its contribution to all kinds of emergency situations, the organisation is active in training, education and the defence of the environment. APSA, another non-profit-making organisation has for the last 50 years worked to improve the quality of life for those with learning difficulties in Alicante province. Since 2011, APSA has worked closely with Alfaz town hall, which is demonstrably committed to helping those with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. As a result of this collaboration, Alfaz is home to the Marina Baja’s first vocational training centre which is orientated towards helping students with learning and development problems find future employment.
