Javea council voted in favour of asking the regional government to declare September 8th a Fiesta of Local Interest.
This is the feast day of Nuestra Señora de Loreto, the patroness of the Duanes district, and a fiesta that Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi pointed out involved the entire town and thousands of visitors.
“This is a landmark that we want to be recognised, protected and promoted,” he added. “We are talking about various generations of men and women, of boys and girls from Javea who learned through these fiestas to love their neighbourhood,” Chulvi said.
“They have transmitted a set of social codes based on solidarity, work and comradeship.”
The Loreto fiestas were important in maintaining and shaping the town’s identity, continued the mayor, who declared that as representatives of the local population, it was the town hall’s obligation to support and be aware of the organisers’ hard work and ensure that the celebrations remained alive and continued to grow and progress.
