Gary McLaren, 50, from Corby in Northamptonshire, was celebrating New Year’s Eve with his fiancee and a group of friends in Pattaya when he tried to light a firework twice and it exploded in his face killing him.
Officers arrived around 12.30am and found Mr McLaren on the ground in front of a beer bar, with serious facial injuries.
CPR was administered but he died at the scene.
McLaren had only just arrived in Thailand days before to visit his girlfriend.
