A COUPLE from Burnham-on-Sea accidentality threw away £15,000 in cash at a recycling centre in Somerset after helping clear the house of a recently-deceased relative where the boxes had been kept.

Worker at the site fortunately stumbled upon the box with the money inside whilst searching for a missing electrical cable.

The staff then alerted Avon and Somerset Police, who managed to track down the people who had left the boxes in question by identifying the car that had dropped off the recycling and finding their address.

When police went to speak to them, the couple from Burnham said they had been in the Bath area helping clear the house of their recently-deceased relative who had a tendency to “hide money in strange places around the house” though never once did the couple think to check the boxes and the money return proved to be an unexpected Christmas present thanks to the staff at the recycling centre who set about to have it returned.

Avon and Somerset Police paid tribute to the staff that had found the cash and had assisted in tracking down the couple posting on Facebook: “We would like to say a big thank you to the staff at the recycling centre. Without their diligent attitude, integrity and assistance, the family would never have known about the money found, and we would not have been able to return it to them, especially in time for Christmas.

“Happy New Year everyone, from all of us at Avon and Somerset Police.”
