Costa del Sol police face drugs charges

TWO Marbella policemen face six years and nine months in jail and a €8.16 million fine for their part in a drugs smuggling operation.

The public prosecutor is calling for the punishment after a court heard they were working hand in hand with smugglers who used jet-skis to land hashish along the coastline of Malaga province. He is asking for 12 other defendants to be given the same sentence.

A Marbella court has been told that National Police and Customs Surveillance intercepted almost 500 kilos of drugs valued at €2.7 million.

The alleged offences date back to June 2012. In phase one of a National police operation, six jet skis were seen to leave Guadalmina Baja and the port of Marbella. They rendezvoused with a mother ship that supplied them with several bundles of hashish.
To avoid being detected by police, the jet-skis split up into two groups of three to land at two different points on the coast of Marbella.

One group landed on Guadalmansa beach and unloaded two of the jet-skis. The crews fled when they spotted a Customs helicopter. The third jet-ski, still loaded with drugs, was abandoned

The investigation revealed that the two local police officers warned the rest of the gang of the presence of other police in the area chosen for the landing of drugs. One of them patrolled the coast by jet-ski and reported back to the smugglers.
A week a second phase of the operation followed four jet-skis, with one of the accused officers seen to be monitoring Guardia Civil patrol boats moored in Benalmadena.

Two of the defendants landed on a beach near the Hotel Kempinski in Estepona, where one of the jet-skis was towed to a house in Las Alberdinas used as a drugs warehouse.

Police moved in and recovered drugs cash and the jet-skis.
