THREE men have been arrested for battering another in a case of mistaken identity.

The victim was punched to the ground then kicked in the head repeatedly. He suffered multiple fractures and has undergone complex surgery to reconstruct his jaw, palate, cheekbones and nose. He is awaiting a second operation.

The vicious attack happened in San Pedro Alcantara when the alleged attackers mistook the victim as a member of a group they had previously had a fight with.

Police say that the assault took place on June 29 in the Avenida de lad Constitucion at around 4.30am.

The victim, who was with a co-worker, was attacked by three men without warning. A fourth person, who accompanied the aggressors, threatened the duo with a knife, although he was not directly involved in the aggression.

Police became aware of the incident when the victim’s mother filed a complaint on behalf of her son who was too badly injured to do so himself.

They launched an investigation and eventually managed to identify and track down several suspects.

Three Paraguayans aged between 26 and 34 were arrested for their alleged responsibility for a crime of injury; the fourth was arrested for his alleged involvement in a crime of threatening behaviour.

In addition, the investigators found that two of the four detainees were in an irregular situation in Spain and were therefore also informed of their rights under the Aliens Act.

The detainees have been handed over into the custody of Marbella court.
