GUARDIA Civil found hundreds of packets of cigarettes hidden underneath a van disembarking from a ferry which does the Algeria to Almeria crossing.
Officers made the discovery during a routine check on vehicles and passengers arriving from North Africa at Almeria port.
They were inspecting van with a foreign number plate driven by 38-year old E.A.G., and loaded up with personal belongings and furniture, when they noticed there was a double bottom at the back of the vehicle made to look like a fuel tank.
A closer look revealed that inside there were 1,250 packs of Marlboro cigarettes lacking the necessary tax stamp.
The Guardia said the cigarettes had a market value of €6,250 euros.
Officers detained the 38-year old, who had been travelling with a family member and his young children.
