PULPI’S giant geode is a “universal natural marvel”, commented acting Culture Minister Jose Guirao following a visit to the geological phenomena last Friday.

The acting minister toured more than 500 metres of galleries in the mine housing the geode, accompanied by Pulpi Mayor Juan Pedro Garcia and the site visits manager Milagros Carretero.

The Pulpi-born politician said he was surprised by how spectacular the whole mine is.

He underlined the importance of conserving and protecting the geode, remarking that when it comes to cultural and natural sites the priority should be “to keep them how we have found them.”

Pulpi Mayor Pedro Garcia explained the sensors installed at different parts of the mine to control parameters like damp and temperature for the perfect conservation of the monument.

Guirao also talked about how opening the geode up to the public represented a way of making Pulpi and the surrounding area better known and at the same time of “reclaiming our rich mining past and making the most of the restoration and recovery of all Pulpi’s mining remains.”

He indicated the national government would be willing to talk to the local council about possible assistance on future geode-related projects where it could, although he also pointed out it is the Junta de Andalucia which is the administration which has responsibility in this matter.
