Homophobic attack in Valencia

A young Italian man was the victim of an allegedly unprovoked homophobic attack as he left Deseo 54, a well-known nightclub in Valencia, on Sunday morning.

A group of men began hurling homophobic slurs at the young man before chasing him and beating him. A group of girls attempted to separate the fight and the man himself tried to defend himself. He was eventually knocked to the ground and the beating continued.

The man’s boyfriend has shared pictures of him on social media showing him with several injuries and a video of the attack was also uploaded to social media. Comments have erupted on the social media channels, some aimed at the people filming the attack as a woman can be heard saying for somebody to call the police and a man’s voice can be heard saying not to.

The mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, condemned the attack yesterday on his Twitter account by saying: “Between all of us we are building a city that is recognised by values that we are proud of and that are opposed to what this aggression represents”.

The video and witness statements have been provided to the police and an investigation is underway.
