A 30-YEAR old man is under arrest for leaving homes and businesses without a phone or internet connection in a large area of Cuevas del Almanzora after stealing communications cables.
The situation left individuals and companies unable to make even emergency calls and alarms not working.
The Guardia Civil 062 centre alerted a patrol to the cut in communications on the night of May 30. Officers quickly managed to locate where the cables had been cut, and spotted an individual fleeing the scene. A search of the area the following morning led to the discovery of the tools used and what officers believed was the criminal’s vehicle.
Officers detained the 30-year old Cuevas resident a day later when he tried to retrieve the car. An inspection of the vehicle revealed he had the back seats down so he could load it up with stolen cable. Officers also found additional evidence linking the man with the theft.
The man’s actions caused more than €2,000 damage to communications lines.
Guardia charged the detainee with a crime against collective security.
