Spanish porn habits revealed

A NEW study by the University of the Balearic Islands and the Youth and Inclusion network in Madrid has found that children as young as eight-years-old are being exposed to pornography.

Researchers asked 2,500 people between the ages of 16 and 29-years-old and is the first study of its kind in the past 10 years to try to determine the habits of pornography users in Spain.

The study showed that the average introduction to adult material is 14-years-old in males and 16 in females. The overwhelming majority of users were also found to be male, with 87 per cent of males having seen the material, whilst almost 30 per cent admitting they may be addicted to it.

The study was designed to make people aware of the once taboo subject, but to also highlight the social dangers of absorbing too much of it.

It was found that consumers experience relationship issues, changes in sexual expectations and also an increased risk of illegal sexual activities.

There is also a strong link between watching pornography and participating in risky sexual practices such as sex without a condom, casual sex and sex with multiple partners.

The larger picture of the study points to a general failure of sex education given to minors, both from educational facilities and children’s parents.

New syllabuses are being implemented slowly throughout the country and parents are advised not to sensor the issue at home but instead embrace it and treat with discussion and reason.
