A RETIRED British TV wrestler aged 80 has been charged with killing his ex-girlfriend in Spain’s Canary Islands.
Jim Breaks, who was known by the ring name of Cry Baby, is alleged to have killed Yorkshire-born Donna Cowley in the Gran Canaria resort of Puerto Rico.
Breaks, who has been in jail since his arrest in June, 2017, has been told he faces a 15-year sentence for homicide.
According to the indictment Breaks, originally from Bradford, punched 47-year-old Donna in the head and body during an argument. He also smashed a cup over her head.
Then he abandoned her to her fate in the bathroom of his flat. She managed to call emergency services but died in hospital the next day.
The mother of two had moved to the island 20 years previously with Breaks. She had met him while working in the pub he ran in Bradford.
Breaks is reported to have told a judge Donna had moved back in with him to be his carer after she lost her job. At an initial hearing he is said to have admitted assaulting her.
No date has yet been set for as trial.
During his heyday Breaks was a regular on ITV’s Saturday wrestling programme, which was viewed by an audience of millions in the 1970s and 1980s.
