FERRY GOOD: Spanish cops detain man smuggling tortoises

A ROUTINE Guardia Civil check on vehicles coming off a ferry from North Africa led to the discovery of a protected species of Mora tortoise in a van.

Officers found the tortoises in a box on top of the dashboard.

The police detained a 39-year old for transporting the tortoise without Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) documentation issued by a member state administrative authority.
