TENNIS ace Rafael Nadal has donated €1 million to the victims of the flash flooding which claimed the lives of 13 people in Mallorca on October 9.

The 32 year-old world number 2 is from the island himself, and lent his personal support during clean-up efforts in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar a day after the catastrophe.

His kind gesture was made public by the local council in an open letter. Signed by the mayor, Mateu Puigros, it said that ‘it is assistance from a person who is very special to us, someone who shows his profound love for our land and our residents every day’.

Nadal has a tennis school in nearby Manacor, which he offered to victims of the flooding as a place of shelter.

The athlete’s donation will be added to the reported €1.6 million that has been raised so far. To date, almost €260,000 has been paid out to those affected by the freak storms.
