SPANISH actress Penélope Cruz has waded into the controversy over the allegations being aimed at Harvey Weinstein with whom she has worked over more than a decade.

In a statement, she voiced her disappointment at his apparent behaviour saying that she was “sad and shocked”  but went on to say that she had never seen the bullying and womanising side of the American producer as he had always been respectful to her.

“I need to express my support to the women that have had such horrible experiences. They have shown great bravery by talking. That kind of abuse of power is absolutely unacceptable. We all, women and men, need to teach future generations about the power of respect and support for one another” she said.

It was thanks to Weinstein’s support that she made her first films in the USA and it was in Vicky Cristina Barcelona produced by the Weinstein Studio that she won her first Oscar.
