THE Madrid branch of the Partido Popular may have used public funds to support the Mariano Rajoy election campaign in 2008.
It is currently estimated that at least €1.3 million was paid to an almost dormant foundation up until 2011.
This revelation is contained in a summary of the results of investigations into political use of public funds by the Guardia Civil which is concentrating on party expenditure and source of funds.
The document suggests that certain false invoices were raised in order to allow funds to be diverted to the political campaigns through subsidies granted to the Foundation for Sustainable Development, ironically known as Fundación Fundescam.
Investigations into possible later payments through a different source are ongoing.
