HAVING detected an increase in the number of counterfeit €20 and €50 bank notes being passed through shops across Girona officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra recognised that the notes showed a similarity to those encountered in 2016.
Although an individual had previously been arrested for producing the original notes, officers started a new investigation and at the end of March arrested three men all involved in either the production or the use of counterfeit notes.
When they entered the home of the main culprit, they discovered an inkjet printer, two scanners, several cartridges, a paper cutter, a computer, several holograms for use with €50 notes and sufficient paper to produce fake notes to a value of €450,000.
The forger had previously been arrested in 1997, 2000 and 2016 for counterfeiting which meant that he only produced limited numbers of notes to order and ensured that those who purchased them only used small amounts at any one time in shops and ONCE outlets.
