Former Miss World to become mayor of Gibraltar

IN a short press release issued by the Government of Gibraltar on behalf of the Chief Minister, it has been announced that at the next meeting of Parliament he proposes to move the following motion:

‘THIS HOUSE APPOINTS Mrs Kaiane Lopez GMH to be Mayor of Gibraltar and Mr John Gonçalves MBE GMD to be her deputy as from Tuesday April 4,  2017.’

The role of mayor is an unpaid one with mainly duties of a ceremonial nature and the person chosen is appointed for one-year periods by parliament. The current mayor Adolfo Canepa will step down after three years of service although he also served from 1976 to 1978.

Although not the first female mayor of Gibraltar, Mrs Lopez, then Miss Aldorino, came to world notice when she was declared Miss World in 2009.
