New status sought for windmills in Javea

LA PLANA: Windmills visible for miles around.

THE group of 11 windmills at La Plana in Javea are regarded as the most important in the Valencian Community.

At its last meeting the council voted to request Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) status for the 11 Montgo windmills and the Safranera mill. The oldest dates from the 14th century.

They are already protected as Assets of Local Relevance and this will be the town hall’s third attempt to gain recognition of their value as cultural symbols and examples of traditional technology.

The first application to the General Directorate of Culture and Heritage was made in October 2003 but this and further attempts in 2004 and 2010 were turned down.

With different political parties in power and different policies, Javea Town Hall hopes for a more favourable reply for its own windmills and those of Pedreguer and other Marina Alta municipalities.
