Lone gunman kills several in US airport attack

UPDATE: Reports suggest that the attacker was an Iraqi war veteran known to US authorities, who has been identified as 26-year-old Esteban Santiago.

Local police have confirmed that he was not shot prior to being detained.


A number of people have been shot dead by a gunman who opened fire at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida.

Terrified travellers who were inside Terminal 2 fled the scene, many of them onto the airport’s tarmac.

The gunman is believed to have been shot by police within moments of opening fire but has not been killed.

One person is reportedly in custody and is thought to be the attacker.

The incident took place at around 1800 GMT in the baggage claim area of terminal 2.
