Russian ambassador to Turkey assassinated at Ankara art show

The Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, has been shot dead, reportedly by an off-duty policeman, at an art show in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
Mr Karlov was making a speech at the event when he was shot at close range by a man who then delivered a speech to the media, apparently protesting about Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Syria.
The attack has been condemned by the USA and the UK. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said: “Shocked to hear of despicable murder of Russia’s Ambassador to Turkey. My thoughts are with his family. I condemn this cowardly attack.”
Mr Karlov had been in post since 2013 and was 62 years old. He was regarded as a veteran diplomat who had sought to mend ties between the two countries after a Russian jet was shot down by a Turkish plane in 2015.
