AFTER a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006, after arriving at Stansted Airport on Friday, December 9 in connection with suspected travel to Syria, further terrorist related arrests took place on Monday December 12.
Four men from Derby aged 22, 27, 35 and 36, a 27-year-old man from Burton on Trent and a 32-year-old woman from London have all been arrested on suspicion of engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Six properties in Derby, Burton on Trent and London are all being searched as part of the investigation and the six people are currently in police custody, although the man arrested the previous Friday has been released on bail.
This is an ongoing investigation led by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit supported by local officers from Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the Metropolitan Police.
A statement from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit which is coordinating the investigation said “We recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of these arrests and local officers will be out in the area as usual to speak to anyone who may have concerns.”
“We would ask people to remain alert and vigilant but not to be alarmed and we are grateful for the assistance, support and understanding of people locally.”
