Drivers who kill could be jailed for life under new plans

Motorists who kill by dangerous or careless driving on the UK’s roads could face life in prison under new plans unveiled by ministers.
Anyone causing death by speeding, illegally racing or while using a mobile phone could also face longer jail terms.
Drivers under the influence of drink or drugs would face an increase in the current maximum sentence which stands at 14 years.
The plans are contained in proposals by the Ministry of Justice which would create a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving. The sentence would be three years in jail.
Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said: “Killer drivers ruin lives. Their actions cause immeasurable pain to families who must endure tragic, unnecessary losses.”
The government’s proposals have been welcomed by road safety groups, but some have called for the offence of careless driving to be scrapped.
