Boquerones and beer celebrations

HALF CENTURY: The San Miguel factory in Malaga.

THAT most quintessential of Spanish beers, San Miguel, has launched a special edition Malaga can to honour the 50th birthday of its factory in the provincial capital.

Replete with the slogan ‘50 years being anchovies’ (Spanish: 50 años siendo boquerones), the commemorative can also features an image of a golden Mediterranean boqueron, the little fish that forms such an integral part of the local culture.

The brand released a statement describing the can as “a nod to everything that it means to be Malagueño” and “feeling boqueron,” with the beer and the city having shared close links since 1966.

Restaurants, bars and hotels will also be supplied with bottles carrying the same decoration, of which seven million units have been produced, while the limited edition cans can be picked up in larger stores and supermarkets.

In addition to the cans and bottles, San Miguel has also given its factory near the airport a birthday facelift, with parts of the exterior having been painted cream and gold with a motif of the 50th anniversary logo.
