SPAIN and Wales were left disappointed after gifting away draws in 2018 World Cup qualifiers they should have taken three points from. 

By contrast the Republic of Ireland played poorly but nevertheless earned an important victory over Georgia at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

A late penalty from Daniele De Rossi helped Italy hold Spain to a 1-1 draw in Turin. Spain dominated Italy throughout in the most anticipated match-up of Group G but are now stuck behind Albania in second after two games. 

Wales top Group D on goal difference after drawing 2-2 in Austria where they really should have put away the home side. They are on four points alongside Serbia, Austria and the Republic of Ireland. 

The other home nations play on Saturday October 8 with Gareth Southgate looking for an easy start as England entertain Malta; Northern Ireland expecting a first victory at home to San Marino; and Scotland hoping to stay top with a home victory over Lithuania.
