All clear is given

TORREMOLINOS Council has been analysing the results of the project to pedestrianise the town centre, and has reported the experience has so far been a positive one.

Deputy Mayor Maribel Tocon reported that, rather than the chaos forecast by some for the summer season particularly, traffic levels and public satisfaction had proved the opposite.

Traffic to Plaza Costa del Sol and part of Avenida Palma de Mallorca, was redirected as of November 28, 2015, and since then, there have been 7 per cent fewer accidents, and almost 35 per cent more opening licences for businesses registered in the area, Tocon stated.

The number of vehicles passing through was measured between August 12 and 29 and a total of 35,575 vehicles counted. The busiest time was on August 13, with 1,539 vehicles per hour, per lane, heading towards Benalmadena. “The DGT traffic authority considers up to 1,500 vehicles as fluid traffic, meaning we can say the project is viable,” the deputy mayor stressed.
