WELCOME WORK: Local events have helped create jobs.
UNEMPLOYMENT in Velez-Malaga has fallen for the ninth consecutive month. In July, there were 8,234 people unemployed in the municipality of nearly 78,000, according to the newly-released data.
The municipality is one of just two in Malaga with nine consecutive months of improvement, according to a statement released by the municipal government. The other is Gaucin, a town of 2,000 near Puerto Banus.
The unemployment figures are the lowest since August 2010, when the number of unemployed stood at 8,083. The mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, noted the role of the government’s plans and recent festivities in boosting the number of visitors and jobs.
“Action plans and improvements implemented by the town hall, together with events like the Weekend Beach Festival and the International Airshow, have helped boost economic activity, and therefore job creation.”
Moreno also appeared optimistic for the future, pointing towards a €2.4 million fund from the Junta de Andalucia regional government, aimed at providing jobs for adults under 30 and the elderly.
