BLUE FLAG: Piedra Villazar was one of the beaches that received the award.
LAST week saw the raising of two official Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) ‘blue flags’ for beaches in Mojacar, one less than last year.
Piedra Villazar and Marina de La Torre were awarded flags after meeting main criteria like cleanliness, services and environmental management.
Mayor Rosa Maria Cano attended the ceremony with tourism councillor Emmanuel Aguero and leading hoteliers including the director of the Mojacar Parador.
Mojacar has 17 kilometres of coastline, seven kilometres of which is beach. Some €37,000 has been spent on improving the beach areas including making access easier for users.
A budget of €140,000 has been allocated to beach management for the summer season to provide services including 25 lifeguards, an ambulance, and a rapid intervention vehicle, all available from 11am to 7pm daily. The beach cleaning team has been increased to 25 staff.
