DOZENS of citizens gathered outside Torremolinos town hall on Tuesday June 14 to hold a minute’s silence and display solidarity for the victims of the tragic mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, in which 50 people lost their lives, with Marbella and Alhaurin de la Torre among the municipalities holding similar events.

Mayor Jose Ortiz was in attendance, alongside representatives of all the town’s political parties and the local LGBT community, plus a number of other residents.

Councillor for Equality, Aida Blanes, castigated all kinds of terrorism in a short speech, saying that “in the 21st century we cannot allow such events to happen, and activities committed for purely homophobic reasons should be condemned in all corners of the globe”, and delivering a call to arms for “society to unite and end this social evil.”

Santiago Rubio, president of LGBT rights group COLEGA Torremolinos begged authorities to display “sufficient strength to ensure that such things do not continue happening”, adding that members of the LGBT fraternity should not be scared or feel intimidated by the shocking event.
