Death toll climbs to seven in Tenerife building collapse

AUTHORITIES in the Canary Islands have reported that several more bodies have been retrieved from the rubble of the four-storey building that collapsed in Tenerife on Thursday (April 14).

In a statement on Saturday (April 16) authorities indicated that four women and three men had lost their lives in the tragedy, although no nationalities were given and the people still have not been officially identified.

Previous reports estimated the death toll at five, but firefighters eventually discovered two more bodies among the debris and devastation.

Several people were hospitalised in the aftermath of the incident, and residents in nearby buildings had to leave their homes, and are currently being housed elsewhere in the city.

At the time being the reasons behind the collapse remain unclear.
