KEITH Emerson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head according to police in Santa Monica, California, and his death is being treated as a suicide. The 71-year-old founder of progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer was found in his apartment on March 10.
“We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles,” said the group’s Facebook page.
There has been an outpouring of tributes for the Yorkshireman, considered one of the finest keyboardists of the 1970’s.
“He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humour, compelling showmanship, and dedication to his musical craft. I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did, together. Rest in peace, Keith.” said former band member Carl Palmer.
ELP were one the preminent and pioneering progressive rock groups of the era, with Emerson regarded as one of the greatest showmen of his generation.
