Tragic death of Guardia Civil officer in Barbastro

ON THE afternoon of March 4, two officers of the Guardia Civil traffic section were undertaking breathalyser and drug testing at a roundabout between the N-240 and the N-123 near the town of Barbastro in Huesca.

At about 7.35pm, the officers spotted an Opel Astra which they stopped and whilst one officer was leaning through the window of the car attempting to breathalyse the driver, his arms were grabbed and the car drove off with him hanging from the car.

After dragging the officer 460 metres, the car reached an intersection and the driver threw the car into a skid, burst one of the tyres and the car shot across the road where it hit an Audi Q7 which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The officer was left on the road where he died despite attempts by the emergency service to assist him when they arrived and two persons in the Audi were injured. Whilst all of this was going on, the four people in the Astra fled the scene.

Officers spent a considerable amount of time taking statements and reviewing security cameras until they were able to identify to their satisfaction the driver of the vehicle who is a 17-year-old male who tested positive for drugs. Also apprehended were another male aged 14, as well as two females aged 14 and 17.
