Date for Motril air display announced

THE mayor of Motril, Flor Almon, has announced that the 11th annual Motril Air display, organised by Orion Aeronautic Association, will take place on June 26 and expects to welcome more than 50,000 visitors.

Some of the best pilots in the world will show off incredible tricks and skills during this celebration, which is considered the most important event of the town and one of the best air displays in Spain.

Past events have included a combination of foreign Air Force and flying club demonstrations, with participants from the French and Turkish air forces amongst many others.

Local Tourism Councillor Alicia Crespo said: “Every year thousands of people come to our town to watch the performances, which means a great opportunity for our businesses. The display is very important for the economy and tourism of Motril as it has more and more spectators each time. Therefore, we are sure that we can reach 50,000 this year.”

There is, of course, some cost to the local council as with such a large influx of people, there will be a need for a full turn out of police, as well as medical backup to cover both expected and unexpected problems such as that which happened at the Shoreham display in 2015, where an aircraft crashed into a road killing 31.
