LIZA MINELLI: Said to have enjoyed nightlife in the area.

FORMER glory is set to return to the Palma neighbourhood of El Terreno, which, in the 50’s, was the place where the jet set and the famous were seen.

International stars such as Ava Gardner and Errol Flynn were frequent visitors to the area and Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli are said to have enjoyed the nightlife too.

Mallorcan promoter, Gabriel Alzina, has purchased the building in which the once famous Joe’s Bar was housed and has big plans for it and for the area.  He started work this summer, eight years after having bought the property, and is working with the architect, Luis Ladaria.

Ladaria is well known for the Rafa Nadal Foundation’s centres in Palma and Manacor.  The reform of the building is expected to be completed next year and the budget is approximately €1,500 per square metre of the whole building.

Alzina’s wish is that whoever takes on the bar will keep in mind the significance of what Joe’s meant to the area and already interesting proposals are being received.  He has thrown down the gauntlet to the town council however, as if the area is to be revived then a good clean up of the facades will be necessary.
