Mireia Lalaguna, Spain’s first ever Miss World.
UNFORTUNATELY Hannah Bado, this year’s Miss Gibraltar was not able to emulate either Kaiane Aldorino who was crowned Miss World in 2009 or Maroua Kharbouch who was named People’s choice in 2013 as she was unplaced in the finals.
This year’s winner did keep the crown in Iberia as it was Miss Spain, Mireia Lalaguna, a student from Barcelona, who became Spain’s first ever Miss World after a three hour televised competition broadcast around the world from Sanya, China.
Although she will no doubt be disappointed, there were over 110 contestants from literally all corners of the world who were participating, so the competition was fierce.
Ironically, the Miss Universe competition took place on the same weekend but with a great deal of confusion both inside and outside of the ceremony at the Planet Hollywood Hotel in Las Vegas.
Firstly, the host Steve Harley wrongly announced that Miss Colombia had won the title and crowned her accordingly, then once he realised his mistake, she had to have the crown removed and, after he apologised, he then named Miss Philippines, Pia Alonza Wurtzbach, as the true winner.
Meanwhile in an unexplained incident the same evening, a woman drove her car onto the pavement near to the Hotel and ploughed into pedestrians resulting in one fatality and 36 injuries, including six which are considered very serious. Investigators have indicated already that they do not consider this to be a ‘terrorist attack’ and the woman is being questioned in custody.
