The Department of the Environment & Climate Change recently organised a training course on energy auditing and ISO50001, the energy management standard. The week long course, held at the University of Gibraltar, was delivered by Target Energy and was attended by 18 individuals.

It was part sponsored by the European Social Fund (ESF) which invests in people, with a focus on improving employment and education opportunities across the European Union. Considering that the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris is currently attracting such interest, news of this course is particularly appropriate.

Successful participants will now become Certified Energy Auditors (CEAs), allowing them to undertake energy audits of businesses and organisations which are required to do so under the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU). HM Government of Gibraltar will be encouraging all businesses to take advantage of the fact that this service is now available locally in order to help reduce the energy costs of doing business.

Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, the Hon Dr John Cortes, commented: “Energy awareness is now an essential part of good environmental governance at every level, in both the private and the public sectors. Our responsibility towards the climate is generating new activity, including economic activity, and it is essential that we are trained to be able to maximise our involvement and keep to our international obligations. I am delighted that the Department is organising these important courses.”
