Son of past ETA leader arrested in Paris

A prominent ETA member has been arrested in Paris, France in a joint operation by Spanish and French police on Tuesday October 6.

The arrest comes after two other high profile captures in September when two of ETA’s political leaders were tracked down in south-west France.

The latest operation focused on a suburb in northern Paris, Saint Denis, and the target was Egoitz Urrutikoetxea, another important figure in the Basque separatist group. His father, a past leader of the group known as Josu Ternera, is still wanted by police.

Urrutikoetxea was twice sentenced in France for being associated with a terrorist organisation. His father was sentenced in French courts at the same time.

The Spanish government indicated that the September arrests seriously undermined the group with ETA responding to say that they would continue to focus on the path toward the peace process.
